Rock ‘n Roll Broadway

San Antonio Symphony POPS features Rock ‘n Roll Broadway

The San Antonio Symphony’s new Assistant Conductor, Akiko Fujimoto will make her debut with the Symphony in a Pops program called “Broadway Rocks.” Three Broadway stars will join the orchestra onstage with music from Mamma Mia!, Tommy, Rent, The Lion King and The Phantom of the Opera.

Akiko Fujimoto begins her appointment as Assistant Conductor of the San Antonio Symphony in January 2012. Hailed as “a very talented conductor who knows her score and her musicians” (Virginia Gazette), Akiko Fujimoto has most recently served as the Conducting Associate for the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Music Director of the William & Mary Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the Williamsburg Youth Orchestras. A native of Japan, Fujimoto attended high school in California and graduated from Stanford University with a Bachelor of Arts in music and psychology.  She holds Master of Music degrees in conducting from the Eastman School of Music and Boston University.
The Broadway singers for “Broadway Rocks” are Capathia Jenkins, Rob Evans and Anne Runolfsson. Jenkins Jenkins made her Broadway debut in The Civil War, and her television credits include 30 Rock, the Practice, Law & Order SVU, the Sopranos. She can be heard on the following film soundtracks: Nine, Chicago, Legally Blonde 2. Rob Evan starred in the original Broadway cast of Jekyll & Hyde, playing the title roles for three years on Broadway and over 1,000 performances worldwide. He has also appeared on Broadway as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. Anne Runolfsson completed a two-year run on Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera and she starred in the national tour of Victor/Victoria.

The POPS series includes six different programs—three at Laurie Auditorium and three at the Majestic Theatre. Future programs on this series include the Bugs Bunny at the Symphony, Fiesta Pops and Star Wars and other Space Odysseys.
